Round 6

May 2nd 2012 07:56
Welcome back for another great weekend of AFL football! A few upsets last weekend, left me with just 6 tips out of 9.

We kick things off for round 6 on Friday night with the Bulldogs taking on Collingwood. The Dogs are coming off a comfortable win over Greater Western Sydney in Canberra, winning the inaugural Prime Minister's Cup, while Collingwood have had a 9 day break after their narrow 1 point ANZAC Day victory against Essendon. Collingwood seem to have found their winning formula again.

Collingwood by 6 goals

Saturday in the early game, Essendon host Brisbane at Docklands. Essendon have had a 10 day break after their 1 point loss to Collingwood on ANZAC Day, while Brisbane are coming off a grueling loss in torrential conditions against Geelong. Brisbane will be glad for the roof, but Essendon are too good.

Essendon by 7 goals

Saturday afternoon we cruise down the Princes Highway to Cardinia Park where Geelong host Melbourne. It's going to be a massacre at the Cattery. Geelong beat Brisbane in torrential rain in Brisbane, while Melbourne gave St. Kilda a run for their money before going down by three goals.

Geelong by 10 goals

Saturday twilight is up at Carrara Stadium, where the Suns take on Fremantle. The Suns had a big loss to North Melbourne, while the Dockers went down at home narrowly to Carlton.

Fremantle by 6 goals

Saturday night starts at the MCG with the Saints and the Hawks. St. Kilda struggled to get over Melbourne, while the Hawks gave up a huge half time lead against Sydney down in Launceston to lose by 6 goals.

Hawthorn by 4 goals

Meanwhile up in Sydney, the Swans take on the Crows. The Swans are soaring with five straight wins after their upset, come from behind victory against Hawthorn, while Adelaide are coming off a showdown win against Port Adelaide.

Sydney by 8 goals

The Sunday early game is Carlton and the Giants. Carlton are coming off a win against Fremantle in Perth, while the Giants suffered a big loss to the Bulldogs. A win isn't far away for GWS, but it definitely isn't this week.

Carlton by 10 goals

Sunday afternoon in Adelaide, Port Adelaide take on the Tigers. Richmond have been looking better and better every week, after fighting to the end against West Coast, eventually going down by 10 points, while Port went down to Adelaide in the Showdown.

Richmond by 2 goals

Finally in the late game, West Coast take on North Melbourne at Subiaco. West Coast had to fight to beat Richmond, while the Roos cruised against Gold Coast.

West Coast by 5 goals

6 last week, and 35 for the year so far.

Here's hoping your team wins, unless I tipped against them! Happy Tipping!

Round 5

April 27th 2012 08:51
It's round 5 of the AFL, and this year that includes the big ANZAC Day clash. Obviously that was a couple of days ago, but I'll talk about it anyway. It was the first match of the round.

Traditional ANZAC Day rivals, Essendon and Collingwood faced off at the MCG on a drizzly Melbourne Wednesday for another cliff-hanger of a match. Collingwood lead most of the day; 7 points at quarter time, 12 at the half and three quarter time. The last quarter though was a thriller. Collingwood got out to a three goal lead before three consecutive goals by Essendon, the last being at four minutes to go leveled the match. Collingwood moved it quickly from the centre bounce into the forward line, resulting in a behind giving them a late lead. Essendon fought hard and got it up their end of the ground and scored a goal through Brent Stanton to give them a five point lead with less than two minutes to play. But again, Collingwood won it forward quickly out of the centre, Jarryd Blair the hero with a goal off the ground. The players, crowd, and thousands of viewers at home had to wait a moment as the video review system was implemented to confirm that Blair did in fact get his boot to the ball. The result came back confirmed, and Collingwood lead by a point. That was how it ended.

I expected, and hoped for an Essendon victory, and they came close for me, but I count that as a tip loss.

So on to the rest of the matches, starting with Friday night football tonight, between Fremantle and Carlton at Subiaco. Fremantle are coming off a narrow, hard fought victory over St. Kilda at Docklands, while Carlton suffered their first loss of the season to Essendon. Carlton will be keen to remedy their shock loss last week, but Perth is a tough road trip, particularly with both WA teams playing so well.

Fremantle by 2 goals

The early game Saturday is up in the nations capital, at Manuka Oval between the GWS Giants and the Western Bulldogs. This is the first real chance for the Giants, but I don't think the Bulldogs are quite as bad as they have played this season so far. They also have a good deal of experience at Manuka over the past few years.

Western Bulldogs by 6 goals

Back in Melbourne at twilight, not that you'd know it under the lid at Docklands, North Melbourne host the Gold Coast. Both teams are coming off big losses, North to Sydney, the Suns to Brisbane. No Ablett, Swallow in doubt, Riscitelli still out, Harbrow out Fraser out.

North Melbourne by 9 goals

Saturday night at the 'G sees the Demons host the Saints. Melbourne lost big to the Bulldogs, St. Kilda also lost, but in a tight contest to Fremantle. I think I've made my position on Melbourne quite clear.

St. Kilda by 6 goals

Meanwhile, up at the 'Gabba, Brisbane host Geelong. Geelong had to fight to get over Richmond, while Brisbane cruised by Gold Coast. Geelong are just too good, but not as good as they were, and Brisbane are better than they were last year.

Geelong by 7 goals

The Sunday early game is down south in Launceston. Hawthorn are hosting Sydney. Hawthorn are coming off a low scoring, narrow loss to West Coast, while Sydney had an easy game at home against North Melbourne. Hawthorn have created a fortress in Launceston in their time there that wont be stormed this weekend.

Hawthorn by 6 goals

Sunday afternoon at Docklands sees Richmond take on West Coast. Richmond fought Geelong, and almost won, while West Coast kicked 21 behinds in their 5 point win over Hawthorn at home. As long as they improve their accuracy, West Coast should have no problems.

West Coast by 6 goals

Finally, the Sunday twilight game, which actually has some meaning being at Football Park in Adelaide, although, that means it will start half an hour earlier than an east coast twilight game. The important thing though, is it is Showdown XXXII (32). Adelaide had a comfortable win against GWS, while Port came up short against Collingwood. It is set to be a huge game, which could go either way.

Adelaide by 2 goals

It was a bad week for tipping last week, at least it was for me. 6 out of 9 tips, for a total of 29 for the season. I'm already one down this week, and there's a couple of matches that could go either way. Here's hoping your team wins, unless I've tipped against them! Happy tipping!

Round 4

April 18th 2012 05:37
Welcome back! What a wonderful week of football we have just witnessed. Here's hoping this week can match the level of competition of round 3.

First match of the round is St. Kilda hosting Fremantle on Friday Night Football at Docklands Stadium. This big clash sees the return of Ross Lyon to Docklands, and his first match against the team he lead to 2 grand finals, and 2 other finals series. St. Kilda are coming off a comprehensive victory over the Western Bulldogs, while Fremantle enjoyed a 5 goal win over Brisbane in a low scoring affair. Both teams are 2 wins and 1 loss

Round 3

April 13th 2012 07:06
Welcome back to AFL Tipper for 2012! I may be a couple of weeks late to the party, but I'm here all the same.

Lets get straight into it with the big Friday night clash between Carlton and Collingwood. Carlton have not beaten Collingwood since 2009. This season though, Carlton have looked extremely impressive, albeit against fairly unimpressive teams in Richmond and Brisbane, while Collingwood have not displayed the same dominance as the past couple of years

After 1 week of finals football we are down to 6 teams. It all happened as expected in the end, despite a couple of close calls.
Adelaide well and truly demolished Essendon on Friday night to eliminate the Bombers.

Round 20 Tips

August 14th 2009 02:37
As we approach September very quickly, each game becomes so much more important, as teams fight for the 8 spots to progress in finals football.

First up on Friday night at the MCG is Hawthorn and Adelaide. This should be a big game. The Crows have been very good all year. Hawthorn haven't, but have been better in past weeks, if you ignore the St. Kilda match. Put that with the fact that Hawthorn will be at home, and it should be a good match
