Round 18 Wrap up
August 3rd 2009 07:16
Another great weekend of football past, and one less week until September. A few suprises, a few heart stoppers, and a few 'as expected' games.
I wouldn't say Carlton winning on Friday night was unexpected, but I wouldn't have minded to lose that tip for the retiring Adam Simpson's sake. The Kangaroos fought hard, but kicked inaccurately, which ultimately cost them a winnable game.
Carlton by 10 points.
Saturday afternoon at Docklands saw Brad Johnson of the Western Bulldogs pass Chris Grant as the most matches played for the red, white and blue from the west. It also saw a terrible white and purple performance, yet again. Fremantle remain the only current AFL club to not win a Premiership, and if memory serves, they haven't played very much September football, let alone win any finals matches. I was however impressed to see them score 80 points against the Dogs. but not enough.
Western Bulldogs by 31 points.
How are the hearts down the highway in Geelong? Another close one for the Cats. Another well fought victory. The Crows didn't let up from the bounce to the siren, and even in the dying seconds threatened to steal the match from the classy Cats jaws. 2 teams that will most likely meet again in September.
Cats by 2 points.
Saturday night in Sydney. So close for the Swans. So close for the Saints. But the Saints go to 18 straight. Sydney fought hard all game, and lead at the half time break. But the Saints proved why they haven't lost, coming back to win it.
St. Kilda by 1 point.
Saturday night back home at the MCG was dissapointing. I thought the Lions should have pushed the Magpies more than they did. In the end Collingwood did it easily.
Collingwood by 40 points.
Sunday at the early game at the MCG saw a poor thriller. Two of the bottom sides, but old rivals still the same, with a lot of historic pride on the line left it to the dying seconds to decide the match. Melbourne continue their losing streak.
Richmond by 4 points.
Across in Adelaide saw an interesting matchup. Hawthorn on fire against mediocre Port Adelaide. In what many thought to be an upset, the home team won. I, however, expected this result. I got the tip, only because i did my tips 2 weeks prior, when Hawthorn weren't coming good just yet. It was a pleasant surprise to see the 7 next to my name.
Port Adelaide by 18 points.
And finally, the late game from Perth. Now this one was an upset in my opinion. Essendon should have won compfortably, but didn't.
West Coast by 27 points.
